Background: INTRODUCTION: A Palestinian guerrilla, alleged to have masterminded the 1972 Munich massacre in which 11 Israeli athletes died, has been shot and seriously wounded in Poland. Abu Daoud, a leader of the Fatah guerrilla group, was hit by five bullets as he sat in the coffee lounge of a Warsaw hotel.

SYNOPSIS: The shooting happened on Saturday (1 August) in the Victoria Inter-Continental Hotel, but no announcement was made at the time. Witnesses said Abu Daoud was alone in the coffee lounge when he was shot.

He got up after being hit in the mouth, chest and intestines, and staggered into the hotel lobby, leaving a trail of blood.

In 1977, Abu Daoud fled to Algiers, where he was interviewed, from France. He'd been freed by the French despite an extradition request from West Germany. Israel accused him of planning the attack in Munich in which 11 members of their Olympic team were killed.

In 1973 he was arrested by the Jordanians on sabotage charges and sentenced to death. His sentence was commuted to life imprisonment and he was later released under an amnesty for Palestinian guerrillas. On Wednesday (5 August) night, doctors in Warsaw said Daoud's condition was grave. A PLO spokesman blamed Israel for the attack.
