Background: Police averted a possible clash between pro-Khomeini and left-wing Iranian students outside the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi on Tuesday (6 May).

SYNOPSIS: The left-wing All-India Iranian Students Association had been holding hunger-strike and sit-in outside the embassy to protest against what they say in "US imperialistic intervention in Iran and continued threats of President Carter". They passed the time by practising anti-US chants.

Earlier, anti-Khomeini students had threatened to occupy the Embassy. But the police prevented the students from storming the building, and also kept them apart from the pro-Khomeini Iranian students Islamic Association (Aligarh) -- who staged a counter-demonstration claiming that this protest was an American plot.

The anti-Khomeini demonstrators allege that over a hundred students have been killed in Iran recently. They also condemn what they call the massacre of different Iranian nationalities -- including the Kurds and the people of Turkman. The students say they support the occupation of the U.S. Embassy in Teheran and the demands for the Shah to be returned.
