  • Description

THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY (O.A.U.) ENDED ITS LATEST MINISTERIAL COUNCIL MEETING IN ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA, LAST NIGHT (SATURDAY) AFTER A WEEK OF STORMY DEBATE WHICH HAS SHAKEN THE ORGANISATION TO ITS FOUNDATIONS. DURING THE WEEK-LONG MEETING, EIGHT NATIONS WALKED OUT OF THE CONFERENCE, INCLUDING DELEGATIONS FROM ALGERIA, SOMALIA AND KENYA.

THE DELEGATES WHO LEFT THE CONFERENCE BEFORE ITS END WALKED OUT OVER RHODESIA, THE SEATING OF THE GHANA DELEGATION, OR BOTH. ALL MADE IT CLEAR THEIR COUNTRIES WERE NOT LEAVING THE O.A.U. HOWEVER, THE CONFERENCE CHAIRMAN, MR. ATO KETEMA YIFRU OF ETHIOPIA, TOLD REPORTERS AFTER THE FINAL MEETING THAT THERE HAD BEEN MOMENTS DURING THE 36-NATION CONFERENCE WHEN HE THOUGHT THE SITUATION VERY CRITICAL FOR THE ORGANISATION ITSELF.

GUINEA, KENYA, MALI, TANZANIA AND THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC WALKED OUT IN PROTEST AGAINST THE PRESENCE OF A DELEGATION REPRESENTING THE NEW GHANA REGIME WHICH OUSTED MR. NKRUMAH LAST WEEK. ALGERIA AND SOMALIA SAID THEY HAD WITHDRAWN BECAUSE THE DRAFT RESOLUTION OF RHODESIA WAS TOO WEAK. A STATEMENT LAST NIGHT BY GHANA SAID THE EMOTIONS SHOWN BY CERTAIN COUNTRIES IN SEEKING TO INTERFERE WITH HER INTERNAL AFFAIRS SEEMED TO SHOW THEIR FRIENDSHIP TO GHANA WAS BASED ON THE PERSONALITY OF ONE MAN ALONE.

AT ONE STAGE, WHETHER OR NOT THE COUNCIL MEETING SHOULD CONTINUE WAS ACTUALLY DEBATED. THIS CAME AFTER KENYA'S DELEGATION, LED BY MR. JOSEPH MURUMBI, THE FOREIGN MINISTER, WALKED OUT BECAUSE OF THE CONFUSION OVER THE SEATING OF THE GHANA DELEGATION. THE DEBATE WENT FOR TWO HOURS, AND ENDED IN DELEGATES DECIDING TO CONTINUE.
