  • Description

England convincingly won the first round of the "England versus the Rest of the World" Speedway Series, which was held at London's White City Stadium on Wednesday night (11 May).

SYNOPSIS: The start of heat 13 with England's Dave Jessup leading into the first bend. He held his lead to win from fellow countryman Gordon Kennett. It was a star studded night. Among the "Rest of the World" team are five former World Champions. The English side sports the current World Champion Peter Collins and the runner up, Malcolm Simmons.

A tight start in heat 16 and Ivan Mauger of New Zealand had the edge at the first bend and could not be budged -- going on to win. Mauger's held the World Championship seven times. Malcolm Simmons of England could only manage third in this heat.

Heat 18, the last of the night and England's Dave Jessup proved his superiority once again. He was followed into the first bend by Anders Michanek of Sweden and they held those positions to the flag. Phil Crump of Australia came third and Gordon Kennett of England fourth. Crump and his Australian team mate Billy Sanders are the current World Team Cup Champions.

Victory for England 63 points to 45. A patchy showing by the "Rest of the World" but there's still five more meetings to go in the series.
