  • Description

Like many another small american town, Knightstown, Indiana, is getting ready to celebrate America's bicentennial in 1776. Fire hydrants are being painted in colours. Flags are flying on downtown stores. And the local mortician, or funeral parlour proprietor, offers, for a little extra money, a patriotic funeral in a red, white and blur-painted coffin, with an american flog on the inside of the lid and another on the satin coverlet. Jane Bechtel, manager of the firm, says the coffin is aimed at the american legion and the daughters of the american revolution. She says 400 have been sold in the last eight months. A complete funeral with the patriotic casket runs to $1,200 or $1,300 compared with about $1,000 for an ordinary job. The casket manufacturer has called his product "The spirit of '76."
