  • Description

In Togo, a conference on non-aligned states met early last week (25, 26 April) to discuss the role of the information industry in the developing world. This is the third time an intergovernmental council on information from the non-aligned states has assembled to discuss the subject.

SYNOPSIS: Delegates from fifteen member countries of the non-aligned group gathered in Lome on Wednesday (25 April). They came from all over the world representing Latin America, the Middle East, the Pacific, Eastern Europe and Africa.

The Tunisian Minister of Information Monsieur Klibi chadli in his conference address, said member countries could not go ahead with development without rethinking the problems of information and thinking about its role and function in the development process. The non-aligned group, he said, needed an information service that was authentically theirs and one which strived to be both dynamic and intelligent. At a meeting of the non-aligned group in 1975 a decision was taken to eventually form a news agency which would better serve the needs of the member states.

The Togolese Foreign Minister Monsieur Anani Akakpo-Ahianyo also addressed the conference. He agreed with Monsieur Chadli, that development could not be organised without thinking of it in a global context. And the sharing of information, both within the group of non-aligned states and with the rest of the world was a necessary part of development.
