  • Description

The Skylab-Two astronauts successfully blasted off into space from Cape kennedy on Saturday (28 July). They linked up with the orbiting skylab space station, and started to settle down for man's longest voyage through space.

The astronauts - Naval Captain Alan Bean, Flight Commander Jack Lousma and Dr. Owen Garriott - were hurled into space by a flawless blast-off. About nine hours later, they linked up with the huge skylab station...their home for the next 59 days.

The only technical hitch in an otherwise perfect flight happened when the ground controllers noted a drop in the fuel pressure gauge of one of the Apollo's thruster jets which controls the ship's course.

Before they hooked up with skylab, the crew flew around the space station to inspect its exterior and to transmit television pictures of it back to ground control in Houston. One part of Skylab concerned them for a moment - its temporary parasol sunshade. The astronauts reported it seemed to be 'flapping in the breeze'. They found that Apollo's thruster jets were the cause of the flapping, and there was no problem.

On Sunday (29 July), the ??? began showing signs of space sickness. All three of then ??? to be suffering from a mild reaction of being thrust into space. Commander Bean Lold ground control that he and Dr. Garriott had what he called 'stomach awareness'. They had two ???pirins. Major Lousma said he felt slightly ill, so he opted for a motion-sickness tablet and went without his dinner.
