  • Description

GROWNUPS ENJOY THE FACILITIES OF LIBRARIES FOR BOOKS. IN COPENHAGEN, CHILDREN GO TO A SIMILARLY-SPIRITED CENTRE TO BORROW TOYS. IT HELPS INSTIL A SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY, THE ORGANISERS SAY.

THE IDEA OF A TOY LENDING SERVICE STEMS FROM A DANISH-BORN AMERICAN, MRS DAGNY INFELD OF LOS ANGELES. TODAY THERE ARE MORE THAN 50 OF THEM THERE.

BORROWERS CAN GO TO THE CENTRE ANY WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. THEY HAVE TO BE BETWEEN FOUR AND 12 YEARS OF AGE AND POSSESS A BORROWER'S CARD. IF THE TOY IS RETURNED ON TIME AND IN GOOD CONDITION, THE CARD IS GIVEN A GOOD MARK. TWENTY GOOD MARKS ENTITLE THE BORROWER TO A SMALL PRIZE, AND 40 ENTITLE HIM OR HER TO A NEW TOY - FOR KEEPS.

200 BORROWERS ARE ON THE CENTRE'S CATALOGUE. THERE IS NO CHARGE FOR THE SERVICE. FOR TOYS IN NEED OF REPAIR, A TOY "HOSPITAL" IS AT HAND. AND FOR TOYS IN NEED OF A SCRUB, THERE ARE ALWAYS ONE OR TWO CIVIC-MINDED YOUNG LADY BORROWERS READY TO DO THE NECESSARY WITH SOAP AND WATER.

ONE OF THE BORROWERS IS A YOUNG MAN OF SEVEN OR SO WHO SURPRISED THE LENDING DEPARTMENT BY TAKING OUT A FANCY DOLL. AFTER DOING SO SEVERAL TIMES, HE CONFIDED: "IT'S FOR MY MAMA. SHE HAS ALWAYS WANTED A FANCY DOLL ON THE SOFA SINCE SHE WAS A GIRL. NOW I CAN HELP."
