  • Description

Prime Minister Robert Muldoon of New Zealand, in Zambia for the Commonwealth Conference, took the opportunity on Wednesday (8 August) to visit one of the Patriotic Front's refugee camps just outside the capital city Lusaka.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Muldoon and his wife were taken on a tour of Victory Camp by officials of the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU). All of the delegates attending the Commonwealth Conference, were encouraged by co-leader of the Patriotic Front, Mr. Joshua Nkomo, to visit the camp. A marked contrast, according to Mr. Nkomo from the 'protected villages' the Zimbabwe government operates.

There are schools at the camps, and the Zambian government supplies most of the food and medicine. However, chronic unemployment and continual shortages hamper the refugees. During a speech at the camp Mr. Muldoon said he was hopeful of a speedy settlement in Zimbabwe Rhodesia.
