    In Singapore on Sunday (8 October), more than a thousand delegates from 37 countries attended the opening session of the 5th Asian-Pacific Congress of Cardiology held at the Shangri-la Hotel.

    The five-day Congress was being organised by the Singapore Cardiac Society under the auspices of the Asian-Pacific Society of Cardiology.

    Singapore's President Benjamin Shares officially opened the conference. In a speech to the delegates, he said that cardiovascular diseases had taken first place in killer ailments in Singapore over the last four ???ars. He went on to add that the statistics had prompted the Singapore Government to put heart diseases ??? the priority list for full development.

    Other speakers during the opening session emphasised the need for closer international cooperation in combating diseases of the heart. It was also revealed that Asian people with a staple diet of rice and fish are less prone to heart attacks and other ailments. Several overseas experts said that autopsy results indicated that the richer societies in the western countries had a higher death rate in cardiological terms than their Asian counterparts.

    The Congress is scheduled to discuss various methods of heart treatment and ways of preventing heart diseases during its session. The delegates are to set up independent discussion groups during the duration of the Congress and comprehensive reports will be presented to the assembly at the end of the Fifth Session.
