  • Description

World Champion racing driver Jack Brabham of Australia, won the Pau International Grand Prix for Formula Two cars April 18, after a thrilling duel with Maurice Trintignant of France, winner of the race in two previous consecutive years. Third Olivier Gendebien of Belgium.

Brabham, driving a Cooper (No 4), had a lead of less than 20 yards over Trintignant, driving a Cooper-Climax (No 2), for most of the 90-lap 248,400 kilometer race as they skidded their cars through the sharp turns of the course through Pau. Gendebien was third, driving a Porsche (No 6) but he had been lapped twice by both Brabham and Trintignant.

How closely the two drivers followed each other can be judged from the final times. Brabham clocked 2 hours 24 minutes 51 seconds, and Trintignant; 2 hours 24 minutes 53.3 seconds.

The race will count towards the Constructors Championships for Formula Two cars.
