    In Leeds two married men, both with children, were ordained as deacons of the Roman Catholic Church on Sunday (2 May). They are the first married men in Britain to become deacons, and will be able marriages and to her services.

    SYNOPSIS: In a special Roman Catholic service at Leeds on Sunday, a teacher and a civil servant....both married men....were ordained as deacons by the Right Reverend William Wheeler, Roman Catholic Bishop of the city. They are the first married men in Britain to become deacons of the Church, and will carry out many of the duties of priests....including administering baptisms, officiating at funerals, and assisting at marriages and other services.

    Their ordination was made possible by a Vatican directive permitting the recruitment of men "of a more mature age or those living in the married state." Between them, the new deacons have eight children.
