  • Description

ELYSEE PALACE; BUSIA EMERGES AND SPEAKS TO REPORTERS. (SOF)

TRANSCRIPT: QUESTION: "CAN WE KNOW THE MAIN ITEMS OF YOUR CONVERSATION WITH PRESIDENT POMPIDOU."

BUSIA: "YES, WE DISCUSSED MATTERS OF MUTUAL INTEREST TO US, OUR DEBTS, AS FAR AS GHANA IS CONCERNED, MATTERS OF TECHNICAL AID, AND DEVELOPMENT IN AFRICA GENERALLY AND THE SITUATION IN BIAFRA."

QUESTION: YES, WELL AS FAR AS THE ECONOMY PROBLEMS ARE CONCERNED, DID FRANCE GIVE YOU AN ASSURANCE THAT SHE WOULD HELP YOU IN YOUR ECONOMIC DIFFICULTIES.

BUSIA: YES, THE POSITION WE TAKE WITH REGARD TO OUR DEBTS IS THAT WITH THE NEW CIVILIAN GOVERNMENT, THE ARRANGEMENTS WHICH PREVIOUSLY HAVE BEEN MADE WERE LINKED TO THE DEMAND OF OUR FOREIGN EXCHANGE AND WE WOULD LIKE ANOTHER MEETING TO CONSIDER RESCHEDULING THESE. AS FRANCE, THE DEBT WE OWE TO FRANCE, IS COMPARATIVELY LITTLE, FRANCE CAN NOT UNDERSTANDABLY TAKE THE INITIATIVE BUT WE HAVE THEIR SYMPATHY AND UNDERSTANDING AND AGREEMENT GENERALLY TO THE PRINCIPLE AND FRANCE IS WILLING TO PARTICIPATE IF THE BIGGER CREDITORS AGREE TO A MEETING.

QUESTION: WHAT ABOUT BIAFRA, WHAT DID YOU DISCUSS THERE.

BUSIA: THE THING ABOUT BIAFRA IS THAT WE ARE CONCERNED AND WE SHALL DO OUT BEST IN TRYING TO GET THE WAR ENDED AND THE TWO SIDES TO AGREE TO DISCUSS UNDER WHAT TERMS THEY WOULD LIVE TOGETHER.

QUESTION: ARE THERE ANY PROSPECTS OF HAVING THE TWO SIDES TO A MEETING.

BUSIA: I THINK THERE ARE PROSPECTS, YES.
