Background: Liverpool striker Ian Rush was awarded the Golden Shoe as Europe's top scorer last season, at the Lido in Paris on October 30. Rush scored 32 goals in the English league to take the trophy, including a fine effort against Aston Villa in January. Joe Fagan the Liverpool manager was presented with the team award as Liverpool's victory in the European Champions' Cup made them the continent's top team. Michel Platini, the captain of the French national side, received two awards, a Golden Shoe for his nine goals in the European Championship and a Golden Ball as the best player in that tournament. Platini produced a series of memorable performances and scored twice in the game against Yugoslavia as he led France to the European Championship. Speaking to Visnews reporter Paul Gittings, Rush said that he was honoured to receive his award and gave credit to his Liverpool team-mates for helping his prolific goal scoring. Rush also expressed hopes that Liverpool would improve on their poor league start this year. Their recent improvement coincides with the return of Rush after injury.
