  • Description

Nearly six million workers went on strike in Italy today (Tuesday 31 October). The biggest stoppage was in Lombardy, the industrial region around Milan in Northern Italy. There, more than four million workers demonstrated for social reforms and full employment.

At the same time, throughout Italy a million building workers staged a 24-hour stoppage in connection with negotiations for new contracts which include substantial wage increases.

For the second day running, about 700,000 schoolteachers were on strike in protest against what they call inadequate government finance for education. Milan's newspapers did not appear, and there were marches and other types of demonstrations in several cities. Rome's Fiumicino airport was hit by a three-hour strike by ground staff, who have been in dispute for weeks over a labour contract.
