  • Description

Surging crowds slowed Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie's car to a crawl in Freetown's city streets on Sunday (16 January) at the start of his four-day visit to Sierra Leone.

A 21-gun salute and tribal drummers greeted the 79-year-old Emperor as his special jet landed at Freetown International airport. Sierra Leone's President Dr. Siaka Stevens, then accompanied the Emperor to the city centre for an official welcome and later to a civic welcome by Freetown's Mayor, Mr, Akibo-Betts.

The Emperor, who told the crowds he hoped his visit would strengthen relations between his country and Sierra Leone, was later to address a special session of Parliament and to tour the Eastern province before leaving for Nigeria.
