  • Description

President Tombalbaye of Chad yesterday (Thursday) denied that the 2,000 French troops in his country were there to help crush a rebellion from the north.

Talking to newsmen on the steps of the Elysees Palace in Paris after lunching with President Pompidou, President Tombalbaye said that the troops were in Chad in an advisory capacity only.

Commenting on reports that the French troops had been called in to crush a rebellion by Northern Nomads, President Tombalbaye said that there was no rebellion, but a series of isolated disturbances in the northern and eastern desert regions.

In accordance with his country's treaty with France, the President had merely asked for a detachment of French troops to act in a supervisory capacity over his own army in Chad.

French officials have made it clear that they wish to reduce as soon as possible the number of the soldiers in Chad, and there are reports that all but a token force will be withdrawn by next summer.
