  • Description

BRITISH VETERANS OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME MET AT THEIPVAL, IN NORTHERN FRANCE, TODAY (FRIDAY) TO MARK THE MORNING EXACTLY 50 YEARS AGO WHEN THEY WENT OVER THE TOP OF THEIR TRENCHES FOR ONE OF THE BLOODIEST BATTLES OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.

SERVING SOLDIERS FROM BRITAIN, FRANCE AND CANADA FORMED GUARDS-OF-HONOUR AT A SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE AT THE BRITISH WAR MEMORIAL. THE SERVICE WAS ONE OF A SERIES BEING CONDUCTED BY THE FORCES IN MEMORY OF THE BATTLE WHICH, IN FOUR AND HALF MONTHS IN 1916, CLAIMED 1,200,000 CASUALTIES - ABOUT 600,000 ON BOTH THE ALLIED AND GERMAN SIDES.

THIEPVAL WAS ONE OF THE VILLAGES MOST STRONGLY DEFENDED BY THE GERMANS. UNLIKE OTHER VILLAGES, IT WAS NOT REBUILT AFTER THE BATTLE.

THERE WERE FEW REGIMENTS IN THE BRITISH ARMY WHICH DID NOT SERVE IN THE BATTLE. THE BRITISH WERE SUPPORTED BY TROOPS FROM AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND, CANADA, INDIA AND SOUTH AFRICA.

SEVEN HOLDERS OF THE VICTORIA CROSS - BRITAIN'S HIGHEST AWARD FOR BRAVERY - WERE AT TODAY'S CEREMONY.
