Background: The English Football Association's Charity Shield match at Wembley between the reigning League Champions and the F.A. Cup winners, is rapidly establishing itself as the traditional curtain-raiser to the new football season.

SYNOPSIS: On Saturday (14 August) it was Southhampton, last season's F.A. Cup Champions, who kicked off against the English League Champions, Liverpool. Southampton in the white strip, had started the match as underdogs, just as they had in the Cup Final earlier this year. But by the second half kick-off, there was nothing in it.

The first half had generally provided rather pedestrian football. But by the interval, both teams had made and missed several chances, and they had settled down to playing relaxed, confident football. In the second half, Southampton quickly went on the attack, led by Channon.

But after only a couple of minutes play after the break, it was Liverpool who mounted the movement which ended with Toshack driving the ball past the Southampton keeper to make it one nil.

The goal brought the match alive, and both sides started playing the sort of football that the crowd had the right to expect from the two reigning top teams.

But at the final whistle, Toshack's single goal was the only score on the board, and it was the Liverpool captain who led his team up the gangway to collect the cup.
