  • Description

Long jumper Tony Haynes is turning somersaults -- but not for joy, because international athletics officials will not recognise his end-over-end style of jumping.

Tony -- who is in the United States Army -- somersaults during his long jumps, a technique that has earned him a large amount of attention but has been outlawed by the International Track and Field Federation.

Tony -- the first American world-class jumper to adopt the technique -- says it makes him more relaxed as he flies through the air. With his method the only worrying part is landing and making sure he falls forward after touching down.

His unconventional style has been compared with the 'Fosbury Flop in high jumping. But -- whereas the 'Flop' has the blessing of international athletics' top administrators -- the tumbling long jump does not.
