  • Description

Over 13,000 riot police were drafted into Paris today in readiness for any demonstrations which might arise from the two big political rallies in the French capital tonight. The special precautions were also due to the threat of the Paris police to strike today if any of their union leaders were punished for calling last week's demonstration on 'danger pay'. There was a possibility of trouble arising from this afternoon's deliberations in the Assembly on the confidence motion over constitutional reform. There was to be held on projected constitutional reforms for building Cabinet power in France against hitherto dominant Assemblies, which by adverse votes had toppled 24 Governments since the war. Mr. Gaillard, already facing the confidence vote on this issue, was expected to make a calming statement in the Assembly about the police question.
