Background: The first round of bi-lateral talks between Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were held in abu Dhabi on Wednesday (8 December).
SYNOPSIS: Iranian foreign minister Abbas Ali Khalatbari headed his country's delegation. He arrived in Abu Dhabi to full welcoming ceremony from UAE officials.
The UAE's foreign minister Ahmed Khalifah al-Suwaidi personally escorted the Iranian delegation from the airport to the conference table. The Iranians' visit will last two days, and most of this time will be taken up with round - table discussions. The first session of talks began just an hour after Mr. Khalatbari's arrival.
According to an official statement, the first meeting between delegations from both sides centred on "continuing contacts." "Gulf issues" were also high on the agenda as were ways of strengthening co-operation between the two countries. Informal talks were also held during and official luncheon reception for the Iranians.
Mr. Khalatbari later described his meeting with his UAE counterpart as "friendly and objective."
