  • Description

The International energy Agency met in Paris, France on Wednesday (19 November) to discuss ways of finding alternative sources of energy.

Eighteen leading industrial non-Communist countries belong to the agency and sent representatives.

During the two day meeting eight western European countries and the United States are expected to sign five agreements on coal research and technology at a shared cost of about 12 million pounds sterling (about 24 million US dollars).

One of the agreements provides for fluidised bed combustion process of coal to be built at Grimethorpe Colliery in the United Kingdom. It is a process for eventual use in electricity production and for specialised industrial production. The coal is burnt to completion and all poisonous by-products are absorbed so that there is as little pollution as possible.

Besides Britain, West Germany and the United States are particularly interested in the fluidised bed combustion process. An electricity generating plant is on the drawing board in the United States.

The International Energy Agency has only existed for a year. One of the Agency's main achievements in that time has been getting members to reduce their oil imports to two million barrels below projected levels. Members also agreed last year to increase their emergency reserves so that they could sustain production without oil imports for 70 days instead of 60.
