He was accompanied by Syria's President Hafez Al-Assad, with whom the 68-year-old monarch had held a series of discussions aimed at improving Arab solidarity.
Following a visit to the Omeyades ??? Damascus, King Faisal flew to Amman to begin a three-day state visit to Jordan. He was given an enthusiastic welcome and greeted by King Hussein.
The Saudi Arabian leader's tour of the Middle East capitals -- which will take him to Cairo next week for talks with Egypt's President Anwar Sadat -- is seen as an attempt to persuade the three Arab states directly involved in confrontation with Israel -- Syria, Jordan and Egypt -- to co-ordinate their attitudes to the resumption of the Geneva peace talks.
As a result of King Faisal's Syrian visit Saudi Arabia will provide Syria immediate financial aid of 150 million US dollars (65 million pounds sterling). The agreement follows Saudi Arabia's payment of 51.5 million US dollars (21.5 million pounds sterling) to Jordan under a resolution taken at the recent Arab summit in Rabat.
