  • Description

A dramatic switch by Defence Minister Moshe Dayan has cleared the way for Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir to form a minority government after two months of political uncertainty.

The change of heart by General Dayan came only hours after a meeting of the Labour Party's Central Committee in Tel Aviv on Tuesday (5 March). In a seven hour session, the committee gave Mrs. Meir an overwhelming vote of confidence, although several members persisted in demands for a national unity government. Mrs. Meir did not attend the session.

The committee appealed to the Israeli Prime Minister to go ahead and form a minority government, at the same time asking Defence Minister Moshe Dayan and Transport and Communication Minister Shimon Peres to reconsider their stands of refusing to serve in a minority government.

The appeal to mrs. Meir to form a government was supported by General Dayan's Rafi faction, although they abstained from voting for the formation of a minority government.

The committee meeting was aimed at resolving the political crisis triggered by the inconclusive results of last December's election, and Mrs. Meir's shock announcement on Sunday that she was to give up efforts to form a new administration.

The 75-year-old Premier who first took office five years ago was apparently upset by General Dayan and his Rafi faction's refusal to take part in a minority government. General Dayan changed his mind at a late-night meeting after the Central Committee's conference.
