Background: Nigerian Head of State Major-General yakubu Gowon arrived in Cotonou last Tuesday (18 August) from Lagos at the start of a two-day official visit. General Gowon was welcomed at the airport by Dahomey President Hubert Maga and other members of the Presidential Council.
In a speech at the airport, President Maga said the visit was of particular significance since both countries were successfully solving their internal problems, and both were resolved to further mutual co-operation.
In reply, General Gowon said he was very happy to be in Dahomey, adding "I have been waiting for a long time for this moment".
Following the speeches, both heads of state drove to the Palace of the Republic and then on to the Cotonou Fair. At a dinner that evening, General Gowon was awarded the Grand Cross of the National Order of Dahomey.
The Nigerian leader was accompanied by his Minister of External Affairs, Dr. Arikpo, as well as other ministers and military leaders.
At the end of General's visit on Wednesday (August 19), he signed an co-operation agreement covering the whole range of relations between the two neighbouring West African countries. Details were not known, but General Gowon said the accord would strengthen ties between Nigeria and Dahomey and open new horizons for both countries.
