  • Description

About 200 women demonstrated in Tokyo on Monday (December 7), the 29th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour.

Waving flags, banners and bamboo canes in one of the city's parks, the women called for equal rights with men and free abortions. They wore helmets, and hand scarves wrapped around their faces to prevent identification. Some tried to stop cameramen from filming the scene, and the cameramen claimed women tried to beat them with bamboo canes.

Demanding an end to the paternalistic pattern of Japanese family life, they said Japanese women were downtrodden. One demonstrator said they objected to cameramen because they saw mass media as part of a man's world.
