  • Description

A seminar on dairy education and development in Africa was opened in Kampala on Monday July 17 by the Ugandan Minister of Animal Resources, Professor William Banage.

Delegates from six English-speaking African countries attended the opening session of the six-day seminar which was organised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation.

The purpose of the conference is to assess the quality of education needed in the participating countries to improve their dairy production.

Opening the conference, Professor Banage said there was an increasing need to boost milk and dairy production in Africa in view of rising world prices. Eh said African countries imported about GBP58 million (sterling) of dairy products each year. Yet these countries possessed millions of acres of potential dairy land.

The countries represented at the Kampala seminar are Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia, Uganda and Zambia. Delegations from Liberia, Tanzania and Sudan were expected to arrive during the course of the conference.

In March last year, milk was among vital foods distributed by the Kenay Red Cross in the northern part of the country. About one hundred thousand people were near to starving because of drought. The final 35ft comprises Visnews library film shot in North Kenya 5 March, 1971.
