    Egyptian leaders mourned the fourth anniversary of the death of former Chief-of-Staff General Abdul Moneim Riad on Friday (9 March) in Cairo.

    The former chief-of-staff was killed on the West Bank of the Suez Canal during an artillery duel in 1969.

    The memorial ceremony at general Riad's grave was led by Egypt's War Minister, General Ahmed Ismail. The dead general's brother, Communications Minister Mahmoud Riad and other military leaders were also present.

    SYNOPSIS: Egyptian Army leader gathered at the tomb of former Chief-of-Staff General Abdul Moneim Riad on Friday - the fourth anniversary of the general's death. He was killed on the West Bank of the Suez Canal during an artillery duel on March the 9th, 1969. He is buried in the family tomb in South-East Cairo. Friday's ceremony was led by Egypt's Minister of War, General Ahmed Ismail. He laid a wreath on the tomb of the dead general.

    After the graveside ceremony, soldiers escorted the two generals to a memorial delivered a speech on the tragedy of the death.

    The former Chief-of-staff was killed just twenty-four hours after the Egyptians claimed the destruction of the first gun emplacement on the Bar Lev Line. The ninth of March has now become officially known as Martyr's Day.
