Miss Costa Rica, Maribal Fernandez Garcia. In the past the Miss World competition has been the focus of both feminist and anti-apartheid protests. But with the banning os Miss South Africa it passed without incident this year.
Miss United States, Debra Jean Freeze, was quoted by bookmarkers at 14-1 to win the contest -- but she was not among the top five.
Before the decisions on the final placing are announced there are moments of extreme tension for the waiting beauties. Mrs Julia Morley, wife of recently-dismissed Mecca entertainments chief Eric Morley, presented the prizes -- and it was Miss Australia who came third. Miss Sweden, twenty-one year-old Ossie Carlsson, was second - and for them the waiting was over. But thirteen other girls were still wondering which of them was going to take the crown.
But not for long. With the announcement of the winner Miss Argentina became Miss World -- and twenty thousand pounds (40 thousand U.S. dollars) richer. She can now look forward to a year of personal appearances and lucrative modelling contracts around the globe.
An emotional moment -- but then it has become almost a traditional for Miss Worlds to weep through their victory parade. Miss Suarez speaks four languages and is an architectural students. She was a surprise winner, quoted at 25-1 by bookies.
