    TWENTY-SIX MEMBERS OF THE KENYAN PARLIAMENT HAVE RESIGNED FROM PRESIDENT KENYATTA'S PARTY. YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) THEY LEFT THE PARLIAMENT BUILDING TO DISCUSS PLANS TO FORM AN OPPOSITION PARTY.

    THE MEN WHO HAVE LEFT KANU (KENYA AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION DECIDED TO APPOINT THE FORMER VICE-PRESIDENT, MR. OGINGA ODINGA AS THEIR LEADER.

    THEIR RESIGNATION BROUGHT THE TOTAL TO 30 SINCE MR. ODINGA QUIT LAST SATURDAY. PARLIAMENT REASSEMBLES NEXT MONTH. UNTIL A NEW PARTY IS FORMED AND REGISTERED, MR. ODINGA'S GROUP IS LIKELY TO SIT IN THE OPPOSITION BENCHES AS INDEPENDENTS.

    AT PRESENT THERE IS NO PARTY IN OPPOSITION TO KANU ACTUALLY REGISTERED. POLITICAL PARTIES ARE REQUIRED BY LAW TO HAVE A REGISTRATION TO BE ABLE TO FUNCTION.

    A GOVERNMENT STATEMENT ON THE RESIGNATIONS SAID THIS IS THE FINAL STAGE IN THE RECENT CAMPAIGN "BY A FEW POWER-HUNGRY INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE MADE NO SECRET OF THEIR PLAN TO WRECK THE GOVERNMENT AND DESTROY UNITY OF THE KENYAN PEOPLE UNDER PRESIDENT KENYATTA."
