  • Description

Syria's President Hafez Al-Assad has been busy recently with Middle East visitors, from Lebanon and Saudi Arabia.

SYNOPSIS: On Tuesday (7 June) he had discussions with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal, who had with him a message from Saudi Arabia's head of state King Khalid. The contents of the message were not immediately disclosed.

Syria and Saudi Arabia have close ties on Middle East matters. Some of Syria's military expenditure is funded directly by Arab oil states, including Saudi Arabia.

A few days earlier, right-wing Lebanese politician Camille Chamoun and his son Dani Chamoun -- both seated on the right --had talks with Syrian ministers, including Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Abdul Karim Adi.

This meeting was held in the Syrian Foreign Ministry, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Abdel Halim Khaddam, who this week (8 June) was in Lebanon for talks with Lebanese leaders, including President Elias Sarkis. One of Mr Khaddam's main taks was to lay the groundwork for a summit meeting expected later this month between President Sarkis and President Assad.

Mr Chamoun, former President of the Lebanese Republic and leader of Lebanon's right-wing National Liberal Party, described his talks with President Assad as "fraternal". He indicated that the meeting covered security in Lebanon, where a mainly Syrian force of 30-thousand is keeping the peace.
