  • Description

While an auction was actually being held at their Dublin, Eire, offices-filmed by VISNEWS May 30-four principals of Shanahan's Stamp Auctions Ltd were arrested on charges of conspiring to defraud and defrauding investors in the company.

Held under the supervision of the official receiver nearly 2,000 lots, worth more than GBP35,000 were auctioned. Detectives, uniformed police and reporters outnumbered bidders in the sale room, watching what was listed on the catalogue as a "Quiet Sale".

Dr. Paul Singer, 48-year-old Viennese born Managing Director; His 40 year old wife Irma; 60 year old James Shanahan, Chairman of the company, and his barrister son Desmond, 30, secretary, have given notice of appeal against the charges.

Three weeks ago the firm was reported to have been robbed of stamps worth GBP350,000. This was closely followed by the voluntary liquidation of the firm.
