  • Description

MORE THAN TEN THOUSAND PEOPLE PARADED THROUGH LIBERATION SQUARE, BAGHDAD, JULY 15, WHILE THE IRAQI PRIME MINISTER, GENERAL KASSEM, ACKNOWLEDGED THEIR CHEERS FROM A PERMANENT SALUTING BASE NEAR A LARGE MONUMENT TO THE 1958 REVOLUTION. THE PREVIOUS DAY-THIRD ANNIVERSARY OF THE REVOLUTION - GENERAL KASSEM TOOK THE SALUTE FROM THE SAME STAND AS IRAQI ARMED FORCES MARCHED PAST IN A PROCESSION LASTING TWO-AND-A-HALF HOURS.

THIS YEAR'S ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS ARE ON A LARGER SCALE THAN EVER BEFORE, THEY BEGAN AT DAWN JULY 14TH WITH "THE CALL OF THE REVOLUTION", AND WILL CONTINUE FOR FIVE DAYS, WITH PARADES, PARTIES, PROCESSIONS, FIREWORKS AND FESTIVALS, THE LAYING OF FOUNDATION STONES, CUTTING OF INAUGURAL TAPES, AND UNVEILING OF REVOLUTIONARY STATUES.

GENERAL KASSEM, SPEAKING JULY 16 AT THE INAUGURATION OF A ROAD FROM BAGHDAD TO KUT, SAID THAT IRAQ WOULD EXTEND THE BAGHDAD-BASRA RAILWAY NOW UNDER CONSTRUCTION TO "OUR PORT IN KUWAIT". HE ALSO SAID IRAQ WOULD DIG A "FREEDOM" CANAL TO CARRY THE WATERS OF THE EUPHRATES TO KUWAIT. "THERE BLOOD AND BREATH OF OUR PEOPLE ARE CRYING FOR FREEDOM AND INDEPENDENCE, AND THE RETURN OF KUWAIT TO THE MOTHER COUNTRY", HE DECLARED.
