Background: West Germany and Iceland reached agreement on their differences over North Atlantic fishing rights in Bonn on Thursday (20 November).

But West German negotiator, Herr Hans-Huergen Wischnewski, Minister of State in the Bonn Foreign Office, says the agreement reached after two days of negotiations still has to be approved by the Icelandic Government.

No details were officially disclosed on the number of West German trawlers and the size of annual catches to be allowed inside Iceland's unilaterally declared 200-mile fishing zone.

Last year, when the limit was not in force, the West German fishing fleets' catch was 60,000 tons.

Herr Wischnewski said Britain, which has a dispute with Iceland over North Atlantic fishing rights, had been kept officially informed of the progress of the negotiations.

He said the agreement might be signed within the next 10 days. But he stressed he did not mean West Germany recognised the 200-mile zone imposed by Iceland around its shores.

The fixing of territorial water limits and fishery protection zones in the world remains to be settled by the international conference of Law of the Sea.
