Background: FOR MOST COUNTRIES, HERALDING IN THE NEW YEAR IS AN EXPENSIVE AND THIRSTY BUSINESS. SOUTH AFRICA IS NO EXCEPTION, WHERE THE HEAT OF HIGH SUMMER MEANS MORE LIQUOR TO SLAKE THE REVELLERS' THIRST. AND IT'S ESPECIALLY EXPENSIVE FOR THE LOWER-PAID AFRICANS AFTER TOASTING - IN BEER - THE ARRIVAL OF CHRISTMAS. SO TO CELEBRATE THE NEW YEAR, THEY RETURN THEIR EMPTY BOTTLES TO RECOVER THE DEPOSITS. THE DEPOSITS ARE SMALL, BUT IT ALL ADDS UP TO ALLOW A THIRST-QUENCHING NEW YEAR'S EVE.
