    AT A CONFERENCE ON LEGAL EDUCATION IN AFRICA, HELD IN ACCRA JAN 5/6, DELEGATES FROM AFRICAN STATES DISCUSSED THE EDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF TERRITORIES THAT HAVE NOT REACHED INDEPENDENCE. REPRESENTATIVES WERE ASKED TO GIVE A GENERAL OUTLINE OF THE POSITION IN THEIR COUNTRIES AND THEIR REQUIREMENTS FOR THE LEGAL EDUCATION AND THE TRAINING OF LAWYERS IN THE FUTURE.

    CHAIRMAN OF THE CONFERENCE WAS SIR ARKU KORSAH, THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF GHANA. HE WAS APPLAUDED WHEN HE SAID THAT DESPITE THE PRESSING NEED FOR AFRICAN LAWYERS IT WAS IMPORTANT THAT THE NATIONS OF AFRICA MAINTAINED HIGH ACADEMIC STANDARDS.

    ANOTHER SPEAKER WAS PROFESSOR LANG, THE DIRECTOR OF LEGAL EDUCATION IN GHANA, WHO SAID THAT HELP FROM OUTSIDE AFRICA WOULD BE NEEDED TO MEET THE PROBLEM OF TRAINING TEACHERS FOR LAW SCHOOLS.

    AMONG THE POINTS COVERED WAS A PLAN FOR THE RECIPROCAL RECOGNITION OF LAW DEGREES AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS THROUGHOUT AFRICA.
