    THE FRENCH GOLD MEDAL CAME IN THE 200 METRES EVENT FOR MEN. ROGER BAMBUCK, A NORTH AFRICAN, COMPLETELY OUTRAN HIS CHIEF RIVAL, MARIAN DUDZIAK, OF POLAND. DUDZIAK WAS EXPECTED TO PROVIDE POLAND WITH A CLEAN SWEEP IN THE MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SPRINT EVENTS. DUDZIAK TOOK THE SILVER MEDAL AND JEAN CLAUDE NALLET, FRANCE, THE BRONZE.

    POLAND EARLIER TOOK THE GOLD AND SILVER MEDALS IN THE WOMEN'S 200 METRES FINAL.

    THE RACE WAS WON BY IRINA KIRSZENTEIN IN 23.1 SECONDS. HER COMPATRIOT, EWA KLOBLUKOWSKA, WAS SECOND WITH THE SOVIET ATHLETE VERA POPKOVA, IN THIRD PLACE.

    ITALY WON ITS FIRST GOLD MEDAL WITH A VICTORY IN THE MEN'S 400 METRES HURDLES.

    ROBERTO FRINOLLI HAD AN EASY VICTORY, COVERING THE DISTANCE IN 49.8 SECONDS. WEST GERMANY SECURED THE SILVER MEDAL THROUGH GERD LOSSDORFER, AND ROBERT POURIER, FRANCE, WAS THIRD.
