Background: Archbishop Theoklitos of Athens appealed in the Greek capital, November 17, for funds to help EOKA "continue the resistance against the occupation forces."
The appeal was followed by a city-wide collection by students and other volunteers.

But according to on-the-spot observers the response was not enthusiastic.

The Panhellenic Committee for Self-Determination of Cyprus, of which Archbishop Theoklitos is chairman, has asked the Public Prosecutor to investigate alleged discrepancies after a similar collection organised by the committee two years ago.

Archbishop Makarios even broke off relations with the committee for a time and an Athens newspaper recently said: "Money from the collection had been eaten up by various persons in Athens and nothing went for the victim in Cyprus."
