Background: The President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, was given an enthusiastic welcome in Malta when he arrived for a three-day state visit on Wednesday (November 7th). The Cypriot leader is held in high regard by the islanders and is particularly admired by the ruling Labour Party for the leadership he has given Cyprus in its fight for independence.

The Governor-General of Malta, Sir Anthony Mamo, Deputy Prime Minister Anton Buttigien and Archbishop Sir Michael Gonzi met President Makarios at the airport.

Bilateral relations and international affairs are expected to be the main topics in President Makarios' talks with the Maltese Prime Minister Mr. Dom Mintoff.

President Makarios will also be taking time out from politics to visit two small islands, where it is said that the apostle of St. Paul, who brought Christianity to malta, was shipwrecked in 60 A.D. He will also be given an honorary degree of Doctor of Law from the Royal University of Malta, during his stay.

On Friday, (November 9th) President Makarios leaves Malta for Libya in an executive jet provided by the Libyan President, Muammar Gaddafi.

The Archbishop is a popular figure on the island and his welcome was enthusiastic.

The ruling Labour Party in particular admires the leadership President Makarios has given Cyprus in its struggle for independence. Malta, under Prime Minister Dom Mintoff, has also fought tough diplomatic battles to loosen its dependence on Britain and members of NATO - the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

As well as discussing affairs of state, with Mr. Mintoff, the Archbishop will also have a chance to study some of the religious aspects of Malta, when he visits St. Paul's Islands. The Apostle is said to have been shipwrecked there in 60 A.D.
