  • Description

Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith has strongly criticised Britain's attitude to the current internal settlement talks in Rhodesia. He called on the British "to get off our backs and stop hindering the progress of our country towards peace and prosperity". This was his response to news of the decision by Patriotic Front guerrilla leaders, Joshua Nkomo and Robert Mugabe, to meet Britain's Foreign Secretary, Dr. David Owen. The meeting will take place in the Mediterranean island of Malta on 30 January.

SYNOPSIS: The town hall of Seke, a Black township near Salisbury, provided Mr. Smith with a venue to launch his attack. He had gone there to attend the inauguration of Rhodesia's first Black urban council.

His audience comprised about 300 people - both Black and White.
