  • Description

AFTER A WEEK OF GROWING TENSION IN LEOPOLDVILLE, FOLLOWING THE ATTACK ON BRITAIN AND FRANCE BY THE FORMER UNITED NATIONS CHIEF IN KATANGA, DR. CONOR O'BRIEN, STUDENTS IN THE CONGOLESE CAPITAL ATTACKED THE BRITISH AND FRENCH EMBASSIES DECEMBER 8. SEVERAL HUNDRED STUDENTS, WAVING PLACARDS THAT DEMANDED THAT THE WESTERN COUNTRIES SHOULD CHANGE THEIR KATANGA POLICY, MADE THE FRENCH EMBASSY THEIR FIRST TARGET.

STONES WERE THROWN THROUGH THE WINDOWS OF THE BUILDING AND THE FRENCH FLAG WAS HAULED TO THE GROUND WHERE IT WAS BURNED. BY THE TIME THEY ARRIVED OUTSIDE THE BRITISH EMBASSY THE CROWD HAD GROWN EVEN LARGER. HERE AGAIN STONES SMASHED THE WINDOWS.

THE BRITISH COAT-OF-ARMS WAS TORN DOWN FROM THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING AND CARRIED AWAY. THE PROCESSION THEN HEADED FOR THE RESIDENCE OF PRIME MINISTER ADOULA OF THE CENTRAL CONGOLESE GOVERNMENT. WHEN THE PRIME MINISTER ADDRESSED THE MOB HE TOLD THEM THAT THEIR DEMONSTRATION WAS UNDEMOCRATIC AND THAT HE COULD NOT APPROVE OF THE ACTION THEY HAD TAKEN. THE MEETING BROKE UP WHEN HE PROMISED THE STUDENTS THAT KATANGA WOULD SOON BE A PART OF THE CONGO AGAIN.
