Background: Visnews filmed the "Ski-Joering" - ski-ing on ice behind motor cycles - races held on the 1-foot thick ice of Lake Zeller near Salzburg, Austria on Feb 15. Motor cycle races on ice were next on the programme. Some 7,000 spectators braved the cold weather.

Ski-joering is a popular winter sport in Austria and Germany. The skiers use ordinary skis and are towed by fast motor cycles over a wide track laid out on the ice. The motor cycles have specially "spiked" tyres, like those used for ice-speedway.

The German "ski-joering" racer Hans Gundl won the 250 cc race, averaging 75.8 kph over the three laps on the 1,250 metre track, driving German-built Maico machine.

The motor cycle race on ice was also won by a German, Albert Franz, who averaged 94.2 kph on his German-built B.M.W. machine.
