SYNOPSIS: Egyptian governors and security chiefs joined members of the Arab Socialist Union's Central Committee for a meeting in Cairo on Monday (Nov 29) to discuss the present situation in the Middle East. The meeting reviewed developments in the Middle East, and discussed various moves for peace in the area since the June war of 1967. The Arab Socialist Union is Egypt's only political organisation.

Arriving for the meeting - Egypt's President Sadat who was to tell delegates that Egypt sees no substitute for war if it's to regain the territory occupied by Israel more than four years ago. President Sadat also strongly criticised the United States. He accused the Americans of lending complete support to Israel. This he described as a threat to world peace.

Egypt's Minister of War, Mamduh Salem, also attended the meeting -- which according to a statement issued later made "certain decisions" to promote preparations for war. A spokesman for the committee says this meeting is the first of a series that President Sadat intends to hold. He says members made a thorough evaluation of the situation.

This meeting in Cairo was held at the same time as the joint Arab Defence Council meeting -which was interrupted by the assassination of the Jordanian Prime Minister, Wasfi Tell.
