    THE FINALS OF THE WEST AFRICAN TENNIS SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP WAS WON YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) BY THOMPSON ONIBOKUN OF NIGERIA BY TWO SETS TO ONE IN HIS MATCH AGAINST PATRICK OBI ALSO OF NIGERIA.

    THE TENNIS, WHICH DID NOT ATTRACT LARGE CROWDS, WAS ORGANISED BY THE NIGERIAN LAWN TENNIS FEDERATION - OTHER COUNTRIES TAKING PART IN THE CHAMPIONSHIPS WERE THE CONGO (BRAZZAVILLE), DAHOMEY, GHANA, NIGERIA, SIERRA LEONE AND TOGO.

    IN THE FINALS OF THE SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP, THE FIRST SET WENT TO ONIBOKUN, THE SECOND SET OBI WON BY SIX GAMES TO FOUR. THEN CAME THE THIRD SET AND IT LOOKED AS THOUGH THE MATCH WOULD GO TO OBI FOR BY THE THIRD SET HE WAS LEADING 4-1, BUT THEN ONIBOKUN RECOVERED AND WON THE LAST AND FINAL SET 6-4.

    THE PRIZES WERE PRESENTED BY MRS AZIKIWE, THE WIFE OF THE NIGERIAN PRESIDENT.
