Background: Tests on an new type of jet-driven boat were carried out October 23 on the Wennsee, one of the Havel River's picturesque bays and holiday resorts in West Berlin.
A Diesel motor unit of 55 HP drives a water jet system which can be swung full circle, enabling high manoeuvrability. In one of the tests, the jet boat spun round twice in the time needed for a normal craft to be turned once.
In another test, a normal motor-driven boat was tied by a rope to the jet craft which proved powerful enough to pull the other way. away.
Engineer Gustov Hovka, 74, spent 15 years of his life developing the jet boat. The unit was brought to its present standard of performance in trials lasting two years.
