  • Description

The Northern approaches to Saigon are still under intense pressure from North Vietnamese forces trying to break through South Vietnamese defences.

An area between 20 and 50 kilometres (about 13 to 30 miles) north of the capital has been under almost constant pressure since the Communist offensive against An Loc - further north on Highway 13 - failed after the longest siege in the history of the war. Now North Vietnamese forces are by-passing the An Loc area end laying siege to villages and hamlets on the way to Saigon.

Correspondents say that this would almost certainly be the battle route of any main force North Vietnamese units in an offensive against Saigon itself.
