  • Description

ZAMBIA'S HIGH COMMISSIONER TO TANZANIA, MR. A. M. SIMBULA, ACCOMPANIED BY THE MANAGER OF THE BRITISH LEYLAND MOTOR COMPANY, WENT DOWN TO DAR ES SALAAM'S DOCKS ON WEDNESDAY TO SEE THE ARRIVAL OF 80 NEW OIL TANKERS.

WORTH MORE THAN GBP500,000, THE TANKERS ARE ASSISTING THE MASSIVE OPERATION TO SUPPLY ZAMBIA WITH OIL SINCE RHODESIA'S ILLEGAL REGIME CLAMPED-DOWN ON OIL CROSSING HER TERRITORY TO ZAMBIA.

THE TANKERS CAN HOLD BETWEEN 2,000 AND 6,000 GALLONS. THEY WILL BE FILLED WITH PETROL AND OIL IN DAR ES SALAAM, AND THEN DRIVEN TO ZAMBIA BY ZAMBIAN DRIVERS.

BECAUSE IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE FOR LEYLANDS TO FULFIL ZAMBIA'S NEED FOR OIL-TANKERS DIRECT FROM BRITAIN, THESE TANKERS WERE BROUGHT FROM ADEN ON THE BRITISH SHIP, "CHANTALA LONDON". ZAMBIA HAS ALSO BEEN ABLE TO OBTAIN TANKERS FROM NIGERIA TO ASSIST THE OIL-LIFT FROM TANZANIA.

(ZAMBIA HAS RECENTLY BOUGHT 30 RAILWAY TANKERS FROM JAPAN TO HELP MALAWI'S RAILWAYS IMPROVED THE BRITISH-SPONSORED TRANSPORTATION OF OIL.)
