  • Description

Thousands of people marched in a military parade through the streets of Turkish capital Ankara on Wednesday (29 October) in the 52nd anniversary celebrations of the Turkish Republic.

The founder of the republic and "Father of the Turks", Kemal Ataturk, was honoured in the celebrations. Ataturk died in 1939. He was General in world War one and led a majority of the National Assembly in 1923 to proclaim the Republic.

The parade was a display of Turkey's military might both past and present. Hundreds of soldiers dressed in traditional Turkish military uniform marched in the same procession as Turkish commandos who travelled home from Cyprus for the anniversary.

Waves of jet fighters skimmed the rooftops of Ankara in an impressive fly-past. The jets, including American-built F-4E Phantoms were being shown off after the partial lifting of the U.S. arms embargo.
