    FOUR COMMUNIST NEWSPAPER WORKERS, JAILED DURING THE 1967 DISTURBANCES IN HONG KONG, WERE RELEASED FROM PRISON YESTERDAY (6 SEPTEMBER).

    THE FOUR, THREE MEN AND A WOMEN WERE AMONG A GROUP OF 11 NEWS WORKERS WHOSE IMPRISONMENT HAS BEEN CITED BY THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA AS THE REASON FOR THE DETENTION OF REUTER'S CORRESPONDENT IN PEKING, MR. ANTHONY GREY, WHO HAS BEEN UNDER ARREST FOR MORE THAN TWO YEARS.

    ONE OF THE 11 WAS RELEASED ON WEDNESDAY (3 SEPTEMBER) AND THE LAST OF THE SIX STILL IN PRISON IS EXPECTED TO BE FREED DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF OCTOBER.

    THE THREE MEN RELEASED YESTERDAY WERE LI SIU-HUNG, A PRINTING-COMPANY PROPRIETOR, CHAK NUEN-FAI, PRINTING-COMPANY MANAGER, AND PUN WAI-WAI, NEWSPAPER EDITOR. THE WOMAN RELEASED WAS PUN'S WIFE, CHAN KIM-YUEN, A NEWSPAPER PUBLISHER.

    CHAK AND LI WERE JAILED FOR THREE YEARS ON 29 AUGUST 1967 ON 12 CHARGES OF SEDITION, ATTEMPTING TO CAUSE DISAFFECTION AMONG THE POLICE, AND PUBLICATION OF FALSE NEWS.

    PUN AND HIS WIFE WERE FOUND GUILTY ON 17 AUGUST 1967 OF NINE CHARGES OF SEDITION AND ATTEMPTING TO CAUSE DISAFFECTION. EACH WAS JAILED FOR A TOTAL OF THREE YEARS. PUN WAS THE EDITOR AND HIS WIFE THE PUBLISHER OF THE TIN FUNG YAT PAO NEWSPAPER.

    ALL THE FOUR RELEASED YESTERDAY RECEIVED THE MAXIMUM ONE-THIRD REMISSION OF THEIR SENTENCES.

    THEY WERE WELCOMED BY A CROWD OF ABOUT 50 PEOPLE WEARING MAO BADGES AND CHANTING MAOIST SLOGANS WHEN RELEASED FROM THE VICTORIA REMAND CENTRE.
